Bonnie Ethel Cone

Established Charlotte’s first state school offering college-level courses to veterans returning from World War II. Served as President when it became Charlotte College and was a skilled advocate in its rise to become UNC at Charlotte in 1956, and later the fourth campus of the UNC system. Received numerous national, state and local awards including the Liberty Bell Awards and honorary doctorates from Coker, Wake Forest, Duke, Davidson and Queens. Woman of the Year 1956.
