Martha W. Edwards

Was the first woman elected to the Charlotte City Council (1955-59) and the first woman to serve in both houses of the N.C. legislature. Focused on early childhood education and daycare and helped to make UNC Charlotte the fourth campus of the consolidated UNC system. Woman of the Year 1955.
