Dr. Ophelia Garmon-Brown

Dr. Ophelia Garmon-Brown was a Charlotte physician who was involved in various aspects of civic leadership. Garmon-Brown held many community roles in Charlotte, most notably being the co-founder of Charlotte Community Health Clinic, which provides free health services to uninsured patients.

Dr. Garmon-Brown was the first Black person elected president of the Mecklenburg County Medical Society. She was the co-leader of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Leading on Opportunity Council. In that latter role, she worked with other community leaders to address system issues that contribute to generational poverty in Charlotte-Mecklenburg.

She served as vice president of business and community partnerships at Novant Health. She eventually became Novant’s senior vice president of physician services.

Garmon-Brown was named the 2020 Citizen of the Carolinas by the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance. She was a selfless humanitarian, minister and leader who left an outsized impact on many people and communities in the Charlotte Region. Woman of the Year 2010.
