Dr. Mary Thomas Burke

A Roman Catholic nun and educator. Recognized for the compassionate and humanitarian spirit that distinguished her activities as a teacher, lecturer, counselor, and friend. Professor and Coordinator of Counselor Education at UNC Charlotte for 20 years, providing invaluable leadership to the development of their M.A. in Counseling. Received many awards including the B’Nai B’Rith Anti-Defamation Human Relations Award in 1978. Woman of the Year 1979.

Betty Chafin Rash

Served as member of the City Council (1975-1981), becoming the first female Mayor Pro-Tem. Advocate for uptown development, neighborhood planning, the arts and affordable housing. Created and directed a Woman’s Leadership Program at Queens College. Co-founded the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Housing Partnership. Founded and served as Executive Director of Central Carolina Choices, a 14-county regional planning collaborative. Woman of the Year 1979.
